It was inevitable that I’d get this call. It is not the first time, but I’ve not had one like this for a while.
Following my previous post, I was contacted by a manager working in a strategic role for a national organisation with international connections.
‘I saw your post… well… your post was shared by a colleague of mine…. What if a person does not like their voice and how it sounds?
Yes there are people who dislike their voices and how they sound… They know their voice doesn’t represent who they are, they know that it let’s them down. But they don’t know how to make changes to their vocal impact; they don’t know what changes to make and they cannot work out why their voice behaves in the way it does across different situations and circumstances.
AS a result, many shut off and shut down their voices. Others speak quietly. Or speak rapidly. And speak when they have to. This is how spoken word habits become career- and life-limiting.
It is worth knowing that when we speak, we hear our voices from within our bodies. It is when we hear a recording (hopefully a good one!) of how we sound, that our voice is heard as others hear it. And, it can be a surprise, a shock, even a wake-up call.
If you have had this experience you’ll know what I mean!
Your journey to success starts with hearing how you sound as you speak, each time you speak. This raw awakening is the starting point for what happens next for you and to your voice!
Yes, you can ignore it; pretend all is well and carry on as usual. The challenge with this approach is that your vocal impact on others will catch up with you.
Given that you are serious about your contribution, your success and your achievements, you recognise that something needs to be done that enables your voice to be heard in the way you wish to be experienced by others.
Banish avoidance. Embrace change. Be ready for future opportunities. Take this first step.
